This just in. I found out that Palin's teleprompter was not visible during much of her speech AND it malfunctioned several times AND her hard copy of the speech was not the final draft for some weird reason. In addition to this, the largest crowd she'd ever spoken to was around 700 people.

Wow. Can I reverse this ticket?

I wish the candidates couldn't read off a teleprompter or have anyone write for them, just get up there and have to riff.

The way I recently heard it said, Like Lazarus, you call someone to take off the death clothes of this world only to wrap them in new religious death clothes. Sad when it's conversion to a system rather than an introduction to a relationship with Yeshua.

There is a great interview with Erwin on the catayst podcast, he says very insightful things to all leaders. I miss the long talks... less typing, quicker dialogue and often shared coffee!

I see the multiplication thing, in fact I am reading "The Multiplying Church" which distinguishes between the two. It makes sense. Hear is a quote from Erwin McManus on some of this generations hang ups with megachurch and "community" focused initiatives. Erwin McManus: We know intuitively that getting bigger and bigger isn’t working. One trend I see is the rejection of growth for self-discovery and the pursuit of authentic community. So we keep whittling our spiritual community to a smaller and smaller and more exclusive inner circle. The problem is if the diagnoses are wrong, so will be the cure. We are moving from large and self-indulgent to small and self-indulgent. The problem isn’t size but value systems. If we keep asking the wrong questions, we are just going to get better wrong answers. The solution to lack of community isn’t to give up on the community."

Wally

I agree about the distinction you're making about either/or propositions (at least in this particular case), but what stood out to me most was the mindset. We need to cultivate a mindset of multiplication and not just addition. In other words, multiplication always adds, but adding doesn't always multiply.

This mindset could be applied in a variety of contexts that could perhaps transcend an either/or mentality. I say that believing there are some things that are worth fighting for that would still present us with plenty of either/or things inside the life of a disciple making community.

I hope that wasn't too much gibberish.

I feel like this is kind of set up as an either/or rather than a both/and situation. For discipleship to take place there should be a clear understanding of who (Jesus) someone is being discipled to (evangelism) and then growing takes place (discipleship). Now if discipleship is truly taking place, then church growth is good (it seems that often "megachurch" is frowned on by the "disciple church"). If discipleship is taking place then a growing church means that the mission (lives changed, community changed, people sent out) can take place at a larger level. I do not hear people criticizing Peter for preaching and having thousands signing on to be followers of the way ("Peter, please, thousands? Why did you do that, we can only have a few at a time, it's too big a group". When the mission is clear and healthy (again changed lives, growing in Christ) then the more the better, right? I want my entire community changed, and beyond, but that seems far more enticing and enjoyable to do with many, rather than a couple of us (that way we have tabs on everyone?). I hope I'm clear, bigger isn't bad if mission is healthy. Invitation to follow Christ isn't bad as long as clarity and relational follow through is ongoing.
