When you visit most church or ministry websites, you will generally find a page or section dedicated to doctrine (or teaching/belief). Almost without exception this will include, if not solely contain, a systematic list of statements regarding their position on a particular issue or topic and be followed by proof texts that serve to back-up their statements.
While I certainly believe that true statements are not only possible, but necessary to boldly make, I do not believe that systematic statements are a good starting point for communicating the gospel story either to those who consider themselves mature Christians or to those being exposed to the gospel for the first time (which are often the same person). You see, while each systematic bullet point may be true in and of itself, it does not lend itself to the hearer/reader to see the larger narrative at work from which they are drawn.
Imagine never having read your favorite novel, but only seeing a list of 10-20 bullet point snapshots from the book. Do you think you could write the novel based on that? Would you really get who the main characters are and why? Would you be able to understand the theme, the plot ...
